Who can apply: Internal to an agency, Federal employees - Excepted service, Federal employees - Competitive service, Veterans, The public.

You must be a U.S. citizen, though non-citizens may be appointed if qualified citizens cannot be found. The job is open to the public, and veterans and certain family members may get preference when qualifications are about equal.

Experience: Experience depends on the grade level. Full grade needs two years of optometric practice, or one year of approved residency training in its place. Education: A doctor of optometry (O.D.) degree from a school accredited by the Council on Optometric Education of the American Optometric Association, or accepted by a state licensing body as qualifying for full licensure.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Active, full and unrestricted license to practice optometry in a U.S. state, territory, or D.C.
  • Current registration in your state of licensure, if that state requires it

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Make sure your resume or C.V. shows your optometry degree, your license details, and the dates and hours of your optometric practice.
  • If you claim veterans' preference, attach your DD-214, and attach an SF-15 with proof if you claim 10-point preference.
  • If you cannot apply online before the deadline, contact Jami Arnt and include CBTC-13106123-27-JA in the Notes field.
