Do you qualify for GS-9 to GS-11?

With experience: For GS-9, no experience is needed beyond the master's degree, but your resume must show five required skills (KSAs) such as crisis intervention and assessing psychosocial needs. For GS-11, you need at least 1 year of post-master's social work experience at the GS-9 level in health care or social work settings, plus a state license to practice independently.

With education: You need a master's degree in social work from a school fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). A doctoral degree in social work cannot replace the master's degree. For GS-11, a doctoral degree in social work may replace the one year of experience.

Licenses and certifications you need:

  • State license or certification to practice social work independently at the master's level (required for GS-11; GS-9 may be waived for otherwise qualified applicants)

How to apply well

What to send:

  • Long-form resume or CV showing dates and the five required skills (KSAs)
  • Official transcript (required for everyone)
  • DD-214 or Statement of Service, if it applies to you
  • VA disability letter, if it applies to you
  • Copy of your state license or certification, if you have one
  • Professional certification, if you have one
  • Cover letter and SF-15, if they apply to you

How you will be rated: You will be rated on how well you meet the qualifications. Your resume, CV and supporting documents will be verified, and reference checks may be done. Errors, omissions or missing required documents can lower your rating or make you ineligible.

Tips for this job:

  • Include a transcript with your application, because it is required even if you use your degree to qualify
  • Show all five required KSAs clearly in your resume with specific examples and dates
  • If you want the student loan program, apply within four months of appointment and contact the EDRP coordinator with questions
