Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to the public, but only U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. can apply. You must prove U.S. citizenship.

Experience: You need one year of specialized experience at a level comparable to GS-11. This means work like doing bio-psychosocial evaluations for mental health patients, offering individual or group counseling, or writing mental health treatment recommendations or plans.

Education: You need a master's degree (or higher) in social work from a school accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. Education cannot replace experience for this job, so you must qualify through experience alone. Foreign degrees must be evaluated and deemed equivalent to a U.S. accredited program.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current, active, valid, unrestricted clinical social work license from a U.S. state, D.C., commonwealth, territory, or jurisdiction
  • Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association or Military Training Network within 30 days of employment

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 5 days (November 10, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your application is reviewed against the qualifications using your resume, supporting documents, and online questionnaire. Incomplete applications are not considered, and inflated or unclear experience can cause you to lose consideration.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Attach copies of your social work license and graduate transcripts, or you will be rated ineligible.
  • Keep your resume to two pages and list hours per week for each job, with month and year dates.
  • Education cannot replace experience here, so describe your specialized experience clearly in plain language without acronyms.
