Who can apply: The public.

This job is open to the public. You must be a U.S. citizen, a U.S. national, or someone who owes allegiance to the U.S. Veterans and military spouses are considered along with all other candidates.

Experience: You need one year of specialized experience, which means work similar to a GS-11 job. This includes biopsychosocial evaluations of behavioral health patients, individual or group clinical counseling, developing behavioral health treatment plans, and helping assign work to subordinates. Paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work, counts if your resume describes it clearly.

Education: You need a master's degree (or higher) in social work from a school accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. Education cannot replace experience at this grade. Foreign degrees must be evaluated by a private organization as equal to a U.S. accredited degree, or given full credit by a U.S. accredited college.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current, active, valid, and unrestricted clinical license to practice social work independently from a U.S. state, D.C., territory, or similar jurisdiction

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 65 days (December 31, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your application package, including your resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire answers, is reviewed to see if you meet the qualifications. Missing or incomplete information can make you ineligible or lower your rating. If the agency finds you inflated your qualifications or experience, you may lose consideration.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Your resume must be two pages or less and must show the hours you worked per week for each job, or it may be marked incomplete.
  • You must upload your transcript and clinical license with your application, or you may be rated ineligible.
  • Volunteer work counts toward experience if your resume clearly describes the specialized duties.
