Do you qualify for GS-9 to GS-11?

With experience: For the GS-11 level, you need at least 1 year of post-master's social work experience at the GS-9 level in health care or other social work settings, plus a state license to practice independently. A doctoral degree in social work can replace the required year of clinical social work experience.

With education: You must have a master's degree in social work from a school fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Schools in candidacy status do not meet this requirement, and a doctoral degree in social work cannot replace the master's degree.

Licenses and certifications you need:

  • State license or certification to independently practice social work at the master's degree level
  • Waiver possible only at the GS-9 level, pending completion of state exam prerequisites

  • Transcript if you use education to qualify
  • License or professional certification if you claim them
  • DD-214 if you claim veterans' preference

  • SF-50 if you are a current or former federal employee

How you will be rated: You will be rated on how well you meet the qualifications, based on your online occupational questionnaire and your documents. Your experience will be verified, so describe it clearly and specifically, because the agency will not make assumptions. Missing required information may lead to an ineligible rating or a lower score.

Tips for this job:

  • Use a long-form resume or CV. The 2-page resume requirement does not apply to this position.
  • Check that your master's degree is from a CSWE-accredited school on the CSWE website before you apply.
