Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to the public, but only U.S. citizens can apply. Employees and applicants must also be found suitable for federal employment.

Experience: For the ND-04 level (similar to GS-12/13), you need at least 1 year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the ND-03 level (GS-09/11) as a professional scientist in design, development, testing, integration or sustainment of system software. For the ND-03 level (GS-09/11), you need at least 1 year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the ND-02 level (GS-05/08) applying computer science theories, algorithm design or modern software methods.

Education: A degree in computer science, or 30 semester hours in a mix of math, statistics and computer science, with at least 15 of those hours in statistics and math that includes differential and integral calculus. For the ND-03 level, a master's or equivalent graduate degree, two full years of graduate study toward a master's, or a related LL.B. or J.D. can replace specialized experience.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 27 days (November 30, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Qualified applicants are rated on their resume and supporting documents against the listed qualifications, and the selecting official may choose to interview them. Missing information, errors or inflated qualifications can lower your rating or make you ineligible.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Secret), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Make your resume show dates, hours per week, and pay plan and grade for each federal job, and keep it to 2 pages.
  • If you use education to qualify, attach transcripts or a course list showing semester hours, since unofficial copies are accepted at first.
  • Faxed applications are not accepted, so apply through the online link in the How to Apply section.
