Who can apply: The public, Internal to an agency.

Open to the public, but only U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. may apply. The announcement is also open to current federal employees of the Department of Veterans Affairs (the hiring agency).

Experience: Experience is matched to a grade level. For example, Nurse I, Level III needs an associate degree or diploma plus 2 years of professional nursing experience, with one year at the Nurse I, Level 2 level. Nurse II needs a bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) plus 2 years of professional nursing at the Nurse I, Level 3 level. Experience is judged on five areas: Practice, Veteran/Patient Driven Care, Leadership, Professional Development, and Evidence-Based Practice/Research.

Education: Education can count toward qualifying, depending on the grade. An associate degree or diploma is enough for Nurse I, Level I. A BSN or a master's degree in nursing can qualify you for higher grades, and some master's or doctoral degrees in related fields also count. The nursing school must be accredited by ACEN or CCNE. Foreign degrees need a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency and are not credited as related degrees.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registered nurse license from a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia
  • Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) exception: a 120-day temporary appointment may be possible while you pursue your license

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 7 days (November 10, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

This job closes when 50 applications are received, which may happen before the official closing date.

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You are rated on how well you meet the qualifications, based on your online questionnaire and submitted documents. VA verifies your application, resume, and supporting documents, and may conduct reference checks. Vague or incomplete descriptions of experience can lower your rating or make you ineligible.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Describe each job's dates, hours per week, and duties clearly, because VA will not assume anything about your experience.
  • If you use education to qualify, include your transcript, or your application may not be credited.
  • Claim veterans' preference in the questionnaire and attach your DD-214 if it applies.
