Who can apply: The public, Internal to an agency.
This job is open to the public, but only U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. can apply, with rare exceptions set by VA policy. First consideration goes to current permanent employees of the VA Puget Sound Health Care System.
Experience: Your nursing experience is judged against grade levels Nurse I through Nurse III. For example, Nurse I Level III requires 2 years of professional nursing experience, with one year at the Nurse I Level 2 level, unless you have a higher degree. Experience can be paid or unpaid, including volunteer work.
Education: An Associate Degree or Diploma in Nursing can qualify you for the lower levels. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) can qualify you for Nurse I Level II with no extra nursing experience, and a Master's in Nursing (MSN) or doctoral degree can qualify you for higher levels. Degrees must come from schools accredited by a U.S. Department of Education-recognized accreditor. Foreign degrees need a formal equivalency validation.
Licenses and certifications:
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted registered nurse license from a U.S. state, territory, Puerto Rico, or the District of Columbia
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes tomorrow (November 6, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: You are rated on how well your answers to the online questionnaire match the qualifications. Your nursing experience is checked for quality across five areas: Practice, Veteran/Patient Driven Care, Leadership, Professional Development, and Evidence-Based Practice/Research. Reference checks are used, and missing or unclear information can lower your rating or make you ineligible.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Describe your nursing experience clearly and specifically, including your level, dates, and hours per week, because the VA will not assume anything.
- Claim veterans' preference in the questionnaire and upload your DD-214 or SF-15 if you qualify, since documentation is required.
- Submit the full application package, including your long-form resume, by the closing time, because incomplete packages can make you ineligible.
