Who can apply: Internal to an agency, The public.
Open to the public, for U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. The announcement's clarification also says current permanent VA employees and current permanent federal employees of other agencies may apply.
Experience: Experience is matched to VA nurse levels (Nurse I, II, and III). For example, a Nurse I, Level III needs 2 years of professional nursing experience, with one year at Nurse I, Level II; experience is also judged on five nursing dimensions. Preferred, but not required: 3 to 5 years of case management or care coordination experience and 3 to 5 years of med-surg experience.
Education: You must graduate from a nursing school accredited by ACEN or CCNE. A bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree in nursing can count toward higher grades. Education must come from schools recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, and foreign degrees above associate level need a formal equivalency validation.
Licenses and certifications:
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted RN registration in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes tomorrow (November 4, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: Your application is rated on the online occupational questionnaire, and your experience is checked against five nursing dimensions. Missing documents, unclear experience, or errors may lower your rating or make you ineligible.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Use a long-form resume or CV; the 2-page resume limit does not apply to this job.
- Claim veterans' preference in the questionnaire and attach DD-214 showing dates and character of service if it applies.
- If you rely on education, send transcripts from schools accredited by a U.S. Department of Education-recognized body.
