Who can apply: Internal to an agency, The public.

The job is open to the public, but only to U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. It is also open to current VA employees, and current permanent VA employees must provide their most recent non-award SF-50 (a federal personnel action form) to verify employment status.

Experience: Preferred experience is 2 years of radiation oncology nursing, or 2 years of nurse navigator, nurse coordinator, or care coordination work. Your experience is judged against VA nurse grade levels (Nurse I to Nurse III), and the announcement lists the years and degrees needed at each level.

Education: You must be a graduate of an accredited professional nursing school. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is preferred, and a master's degree in nursing can also count toward certain grade levels.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted nursing registration (license) from a U.S. state, territory, Puerto Rico, or the District of Columbia

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 6 days (November 9, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your application is checked for qualification and eligibility, and then rated on how well your experience meets the requirements. Experience is judged on five nursing dimensions: Practice, Veteran/Patient Driven Care, Leadership, Professional Development, and Evidence-Based Practice/Research, and missing required information may lead to an ineligible rating.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Describe your radiation oncology or navigation work clearly and specifically, with dates, since the announcement says it will not assume your experience.
  • Attach your transcript, and only list schools accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting body.
  • If you claim veterans' preference, attach your DD-214 and select the preference in the questionnaire.
  • The announcement lists telework as ad-hoc in one place but as not eligible in the official data, so ask the agency contact, Mark Lemke, if this matters to you.
