Do you qualify for VN?
With experience: Preferred, not required: 1 to 3 years of RN experience, including at least 1 year of outpatient experience. Experience is rated for grade levels from Nurse I to Nurse III. For example, Nurse I, Level III needs an associate degree plus 2 years of professional nursing experience, with 1 year at the Level II standard.
With education: You must be a graduate of a nursing school accredited by ACEN or CCNE. An associate degree or diploma in nursing is enough for the entry level. A bachelor's (BSN) or master's (MSN) degree can help you qualify for higher levels. Foreign nursing education needs a formal equivalency validation.
Licenses and certifications you need:
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted RN registration from a U.S. state, territory, Puerto Rico, or D.C.
How to apply well
What to send:
- Long-form resume or CV showing job title, duties, month and year dates, and hours per week
- Education listed on the resume with school name and conferred date
- Registered Nurse license
- Transcript if you use education to qualify
- Certificate of Foreign Equivalency with transcript if you use foreign education
- Current non-award SF-50 from this calendar year if you are a current or former federal employee
- DD-214 if you claim veterans' preference
- SF-15 if you claim 10-point veterans' preference
- VA Disability Letter if applicable
- Cover letter if applicable
How you will be rated: You are rated on how well you meet the qualifications through an online occupational questionnaire. Your nursing experience is judged on five areas: practice, veteran and patient-driven care, leadership, professional development, and evidence-based practice or research. Your answers and resume are verified, and vague answers or missing information can lower your rating or make you ineligible.
Tips for this job:
- Your resume must show month and year dates, hours per week, and education with school and conferred date, because your answers will be checked against it.
- Attach your SF-50 if you are a current VA Connecticut permanent employee, a health professions trainee graduate, or a current federal employee.
- Use the 2-page resume limit only if it applies: the announcement says the 2-page resume requirement does not apply here, so a long-form CV is expected.
