Who can apply: Internal to an agency, The public.

The job is open to U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S., and to current federal employees of the hiring agency. Current VA West Los Angeles Healthcare System employees get first consideration if they submit a current SF-50 as proof of employment.

Experience: Your experience must match the grade level, and the amount needed depends on your education. For example, a BSN plus 1 year of professional nursing equivalent to Nurse I, Level 2 matches Nurse I, Level 3. Preferred but not required: 2 or more years of care coordination, case management, or patient education for patients with complex neurological or medical conditions.

Education: You must graduate from a school of professional nursing accredited by ACEN or CCNE when you completed the program. An Associate Degree or Diploma in Nursing qualifies for the entry level, and a BSN or MSN can qualify you for higher levels. Foreign degrees need formal equivalency validation for credit above associate level.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registered nurse license in a U.S. state, territory, Puerto Rico, or the District of Columbia

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 3 days (November 6, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

The job may close before the closing date once the agency receives 50 applications, so apply early.

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You are rated on how well you meet the qualifications, based on the online questionnaire. Your RN experience is checked against five nursing dimensions, and missing required information may result in an ineligible rating or a lower overall rating.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Use a long-form resume or CV; the 2-page resume limit does not apply to this job.
  • If you work at VA West Los Angeles now, include your current SF-50 or you will not get first consideration.
  • Describe your nursing experience clearly, with dates and hours per week, because the agency will not assume anything.
