Do you qualify for VN?
With experience: Your experience must match a Nurse I, Level 2 or Level 3 standard or the Nurse II or III standard, depending on your education. Paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work, counts. Telehealth experience is preferred.
With education: You must be a graduate of a nursing school accredited by ACEN or CCNE, or a graduate of a foreign nursing school with a current, full, active, unrestricted registration. Your education level (associate, bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree) affects which grade you qualify for. Education from schools not recognized by the U.S. Department of Education does not count.
Licenses and certifications you need:
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted nurse registration in a U.S. state, territory, Puerto Rico, or D.C.
- Graduate Nurse Technician option: 120-day temporary appointment while you pursue a license, if you otherwise qualify
How to apply well
What to send:
- Long-form resume or curriculum vitae (CV)
- SF-50, Notification of Personnel Action (current federal employees must send their most recent SF-50)
- DD-214 if you claim veterans' preference
- SF-15 if you claim 10-point veterans' preference, with required proof
- Transcripts if you rely on education to qualify

How you will be rated: Your application, resume, CV, and supporting documents are rated on how well you meet the qualifications, and they will be verified. Your nursing experience is judged on five areas: practice, Veteran- or patient-driven care, leadership, professional development, and evidence-based practice or research. Errors, omissions, or missing required information can lower your rating or make you ineligible.
Tips for this job:
- Use a long-form resume or CV that shows dates, hours per week, and specific nursing duties, because the agency verifies everything. The 2-page resume limit does not apply to this job.
- Match your work history clearly to the Nurse I, II, or III levels, since your grade depends on your education and experience.
