Who can apply: Internal to an agency, The public.

Open to the public, but limited to U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. Current federal employees of the hiring agency may also apply, and the first area of consideration is current facility employees. Veterans' preference applies when qualifications are approximately equal.

Experience: Your nursing experience is measured against the Nurse I to Nurse III levels, and Nurse III is the highest level listed. For Nurse III, you need 2 years of specialized nursing experience, one of which is equivalent to Nurse II, plus the required education. Experience is also reviewed on five areas: Practice, Veteran/Patient Driven Care, Leadership, Professional Development, and Evidence-Based Practice/Research. Preferred experience includes 3 or more years each in Cath Lab, IR, and nursing leadership.

Education: You must be a graduate of a professional nursing school accredited by ACEN or CCNE, or meet a listed alternative such as a foreign nursing school with a full, active, unrestricted registration. For Nurse III, you need a Master's degree in Nursing (MSN), or a Master's in a related field with a BSN. Foreign degrees are not accepted as related degrees. A Master's degree in Nursing is also preferred.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted nursing registration (RN license) from a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 6 days (November 9, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You are rated on how well you meet the qualifications, based on your online questionnaire and documents. Your application, resume, CV, and supporting documents will be verified, and errors or missing information may lower your rating or make you ineligible. The agency does not assume anything about your experience, so be clear and specific.

Apply on USAJOBS ↗
4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Be clear and specific about your Cath Lab, IR, and nursing leadership experience, since the agency will not assume anything.
  • Claim veterans' preference in the questionnaire and send your DD-214 with your application if it applies.
  • Submit your complete application package, including your long-form resume or CV, by the closing date. Missing documents can lead to an ineligible rating.
