Do you qualify for VN?

With experience: Your experience is matched to nurse grade levels (Nurse I, Level II through Nurse III). For example, Nurse I, Level III requires an associate degree or diploma plus 2 years of professional nursing experience, one year of which is at Nurse I, Level II. Experience with mental health and healthcare is preferred.

With education: You must graduate from a nursing school accredited by ACEN or CCNE when you finished the program. A bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) can qualify you for some levels without extra nursing experience, and a master's or doctoral degree can qualify you for higher levels. Degrees from foreign schools need a formal equivalency review to count above associate degree level. Education cannot replace experience at this grade.

Licenses and certifications you need:

  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted nurse registration in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia

How to apply well

What to send:

  • Long-form resume or curriculum vitae (CV) with clear dates and duties
  • Transcript if you qualify through education
  • Professional certification or license copy if you have one

  • SF-15 if you claim 10-point veterans' preference
  • SF-50 dated within the past year if you are a current permanent VA employee
  • Cover letter, if you choose to include one

How you will be rated: You are rated on how well you meet the qualifications, using an online questionnaire. Your nursing experience is judged on five areas: practice, veteran and patient driven care, leadership, professional development, and evidence-based practice or research. Missing information or documents may lower your rating or make you ineligible.

Tips for this job:

  • Describe your nursing experience clearly and specifically, including dates, hours per week, and patient populations, because the agency will not assume details.
  • If you plan to use EDRP, ask the EDRP Coordinator at Joshua.Titensor@va.gov about eligibility and submit the application within 4 months of appointment.
  • If you claim veterans' preference, select the preference in the questionnaire and upload your DD-214 or SF-15 with proof, or your claim may not be credited.
