Who can apply: The public.

This job is open to the public. You must be a U.S. citizen, a U.S. national, or someone who owes allegiance to the United States. Current VISN 6 VA Healthcare System employees must submit an SF-50 (a federal personnel form) as proof of current employment.

Experience: For the top level, Nurse III, you need 2 years of specialized nursing experience (nursing work in a particular area of care), and one of those years must match the Nurse II level. The preferred experience is at least 5 years of nursing practice, including 3 or more recent years in ambulatory care.

Education: You must graduate from an accredited nursing school, and the school must be accredited by ACEN or CCNE. For Nurse III, you need a master's degree in nursing (MSN) with the 2 years of experience, or a master's in a related health field with a BSN (bachelor's in nursing), or a doctorate in nursing with 1 year of experience. Foreign degrees are not accepted as related degrees.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registered nurse license from a U.S. state, territory, Puerto Rico, or D.C.
  • Current, valid state-issued driver's license

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

Missing information or errors can lower your rating or make you ineligible.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Send a full long-form resume or CV with clear dates, since the 2-page resume limit does not apply to this job.
  • Do not send a copy of your driver's license with your application; you will provide it only if you are interviewed.
  • If you qualify through education, send your transcript and check that your school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized body.
