Who can apply: The public, Internal to an agency.
The job is open to the public, but applicants must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. Current federal employees of the hiring agency may also apply under the internal category.
Experience: Experience is matched to nurse grade levels, Nurse I through Nurse III, based on your education. For example, Nurse II requires a BSN with 2 years of professional nursing experience equivalent to Nurse I, Level 3. Preferred experience includes hospice, rehab, skilled nursing, and leadership.
Education: You must be a graduate of a professional nursing school accredited by ACEN or CCNE, or meet the other nursing education paths listed. Degrees such as an ADN, BSN, MSN, or doctorate can count toward higher levels. Only degrees from accredited schools recognized by the U.S. Department of Education count, and a transcript is required if you use education to qualify.

- Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a U.S. state, territory, Puerto Rico, or D.C.
- One full and unrestricted license from any U.S. state or territory

3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes tomorrow (November 4, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: You will be rated on how well you meet the qualifications, based on your online questionnaire and documents. Your experience is judged on five dimensions of nursing: Practice, Veteran/Patient Driven Care, Leadership, Professional Development, and Evidence-Based Practice/Research. Errors or missing documents can lower your rating or make you ineligible, and reference checks may be done.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Describe your nursing experience clearly, with dates, hours per week, and any leadership or preferred settings such as hospice, rehab, or skilled nursing.
- Send a transcript if you use education to qualify, and make sure the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education-recognized body.
- If you claim veterans' preference, select it in the questionnaire and upload the required proof, such as DD-214 or SF-15.
