Who can apply: The public.

Open to U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals and people who owe allegiance to the U.S. Preferences are listed, including Military Spouse Preference, Outside Applicant Veteran and Transition Hiring Preference, and you must prove any preference you claim.

Experience: You need an approved, current, nationally recognized certification in lifesaving and water rescue methods, basic first aid, and CPR (child and adult). Paid or unpaid experience, including volunteer work, counts toward qualifying.

Education: Education cannot replace experience at this grade. Foreign education counts only if you show it is equivalent to a U.S. education.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Approved, current nationally recognized lifesaving and water rescue certificate
  • Basic first aid and CPR certificate (child and adult)

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 62 days (January 4, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your application is first checked against the qualifications. Your resume and documents are then compared with your questionnaire answers to confirm your experience. If you appear to have overstated your experience, you may lose consideration, and errors or missing items can affect your eligibility.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Get your lifesaving, water rescue, first aid and CPR certificates before applying, since they are required and missing ones make your application incomplete.
  • Make sure your resume clearly shows your current lifesaving and CPR certifications, because they are the only listed qualifying requirement.
  • When you submit the online application, re-select your resume and documents from your USAJOBS account and label each document type.
