Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to the public, but only U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. Clarification from the agency lists U.S. citizens, individuals with disabilities (30% or more), and VRA (a hiring authority for eligible veterans).

Experience: For the lowest level, you need 3 years of progressively responsible general work experience that shows problem analysis and work planning, including at least 1 year at the GS-4 level. For higher levels, you need at least 1 year of HR specialized experience at the level just below the job, such as advising managers or leading HR work.

Education: A full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university can qualify you at the lowest level. Education and experience can be combined. At the FV-G level, a Ph.D. or 3 full years of graduate study toward a related doctoral degree can qualify you. Foreign education must include an evaluation from a recognized evaluator.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 58 days (December 31, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You will be rated on the extent and quality of your experience, education and training compared with the duties of the job. Some, none or all candidates may be interviewed, and you may be asked to complete one or more assessments. Errors, missing information or answers your resume does not support may lower your rating or make you ineligible.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • List each job's title, employer, start and end dates, and hours per week in your resume.
  • Upload your college transcripts with your application, since education qualifications require them.
  • Answer the job questionnaire fully and make sure your resume backs up each answer.
