Who can apply: Special authorities, The public, Veterans, Military spouses, Peace Corps & AmeriCorps Vista, Individuals with disabilities.

Open to all U.S. citizens, nationals, and people who owe allegiance to the U.S. The notice also lists veterans, military spouses, people with disabilities eligible under Schedule A (a hiring path for people with disabilities), Peace Corps or AmeriCorps VISTA alumni, and people with special hiring authorities. The announcement says Veterans Preference does not apply to this vacancy.

Experience: For FV-F (GS-9 and below), you need at least 1 year of specialized experience equal to GS-4, such as working on complex mechanical equipment, using test equipment, or reading diagrams. For FV-G (GS-10/11), you need at least 1 year of specialized experience equal to the FV-F level, such as installing, testing, or troubleshooting systems and writing reports. Specialized experience means work that gave you the skills needed for this job.

Education: A full 4-year bachelor's degree with major study in engineering, construction, or industrial technology, or at least 24 semester hours from an accredited college in courses such as engineering, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science, or math. A combination of education and experience may also qualify.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 117 days (February 23, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: HR reviews your qualifications, then sends eligible candidates to the hiring manager, and some, none, or all candidates may be interviewed. You may be rated on experience, education, and training, and may need to complete one or more assessments. Errors, omissions, or unsupported answers can lower your rating or make you ineligible.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • List hours per week and exact dates for each job on your resume, since missing details can make you ineligible.
  • If you qualify through education, upload transcripts by the closing date and include the announcement number.
  • Keep your resume to two pages and clearly match your past work to the specialized experience requirements.
