This job is open to the public, but you must be a U.S. citizen, national, or someone who owes allegiance to the U.S. Non-citizens may be hired only when qualified citizens cannot be recruited.

Experience: You need at least 2 years of experience as a professional psychologist, including 1 year at the GS-12 level. You also need skills in applying psychological treatments, giving professional consultation, and knowing clinical research. This job is graded at GS-13.

Education: You need a doctoral degree in psychology from a program accredited by APA, PCSAS, or CPA, with a specialty that matches the job. You also need a completed internship accredited by APA or CPA. Other paths exist, such as a doctoral degree in any psychology area plus an approved re-specialization program, or certain older degrees, but they have strict rules.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Full, current, unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or D.C.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Include a license, a long-form resume or CV, and a transcript in your package, and submit it by the deadline
  • Be ready for fast steps: interviews within days, references within 3-5 days, and pre-employment tasks within 3 days of a tentative offer
  • If you use education to qualify, send transcripts and make sure your schools are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education-recognized agency
