Who can apply: The public.

This job is open to U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. Non-U.S. nationals qualify only if they have lived in the U.S. or a U.S. territory for at least three continuous years right before federal service starts.

Experience: At the Target level, you need 18 months of experience working in a group program with children or youth, plus a Child Development Associate (CDA) or Military School-Age Credential. At the Entry level, you need 12 months of experience working in a group program with children or youth.

Education: An AA degree with a major emphasis in early childhood education or child development can qualify you at the Entry level. A BA/BS with a major emphasis in early childhood education, elementary education, child development, home economics, special education or a related behavioral science can also qualify you at the Entry level. Proof of education is required when you apply.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Child Development Associate (CDA) or Military School-Age Credential, which you must maintain (for Target-level qualification)

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 2 days (November 5, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your questionnaire answers are checked first, then HR reviews your resume, supporting documents and education against the requirements. Incomplete questionnaire answers may make you ineligible, and overstated experience may hurt your consideration.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Show your years of group program experience with children or youth clearly on your two-page resume
  • Upload proof of education and your CDA or Military School-Age Credential, since education must come from accredited schools
  • Answer every questionnaire item, because blank answers can make you ineligible
