Can you apply?

Yes, if you are a U.S. citizen: this job is open to everyone.

  • Open to everyoneAny U.S. citizen or national can apply. Some jobs also accept non-citizens; the announcement says so.

This job is open to the public. You must be a U.S. citizen, a U.S. national, or a person who owes allegiance to the U.S. Current or recent political appointees (within 5 years) must disclose this to HR.

What you would do

  • Oversee the assigned maritime munitions portfolio and flag program problems early.
  • Assess mission performance for budget reviews and congressional reporting.
  • Advise senior leaders on mission gaps, weapon needs, and research requirements.
  • Develop and review acquisition strategies, program baselines, and risk reduction plans.
  • Check that the military services follow department guidance and direction.

Do you qualify for NH-4?

With experience: You need one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-13 to qualify at the NH-IV level. Specialized experience means directing acquisition oversight for major defense programs, building acquisition strategies and program baselines, and leading teams across military services and oversight groups. Paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work, counts.

With education: Education cannot replace experience at this grade.

How to apply well

What to send:

  • Resume, no more than 2 pages, in PDF with margins of at least 0.5 inch and font of at least 10 point
  • Resume showing months, dates, and hours worked per week for each job
  • Cover letter (optional)
  • Most recent SF-50 showing competitive service and highest grade held, if you are or were a federal employee
  • DD-214, SF-15, VA letter, or certification of expected discharge, if claiming veterans' preference
  • Political appointee statement with position title, appointment type, agency, and dates, if applicable
  • Other noncompetitive appointment documents, if applicable

How you will be rated: Applicants are checked only for minimum qualifications and eligibility, with no traditional rating or ranking. Veterans' preference is a positive factor when making selections, and incomplete packages or resumes that cannot confirm experience length can lead to removal.

Tips for this job:

  • Show months, dates, and hours per week for every job on your resume, or you may be removed.
  • Match your experience to the three specialized experience areas listed in the qualifications.
  • Upload your DD-214 or other veteran proof with your application, since missing documents can make you ineligible.
