1 Check you can apply You are here

Who can apply: The public.

Open to the public, but the agency clarifies that only U.S. citizens may apply. Applicants must also be determined suitable for federal employment.

Experience: For GS-9: at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to GS-7, in federal or private or public sector work. For GS-7: at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to GS-5. Specialized experience means work such as assisting with financial or management reviews, analyzing problems, gathering project funding data, or planning and organizing reports.

Education: Education can be used instead of specialized experience. For GS-9: a Master's or equivalent graduate degree, two full years of progressively higher graduate education leading to a Master's, or an LL.B. or J.D. directly related to the job. For GS-7: one full year of graduate education, or a Bachelor's degree with superior academic achievement.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 360 days (October 29, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Human Resources reviews your resume against the minimum qualifications and rates you on the information it contains. Qualified applicants are referred to the hiring manager, who may interview them, and you may be asked for more documents if selected. Inflated qualifications, incomplete packages, or illegible resumes can lead to an ineligible rating.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Secret), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Your resume must show start and end dates (month/year), hours per week for part-time work, and pay plan, series, and grade for federal jobs.
  • If you use education to qualify, include transcripts or a course list with grades and dates, or a copy of your degree if coursework need not be verified.
  • Keep your resume to 2 pages and make sure it is easy to read, because unreadable resumes will not be considered.
