Who can apply: The public.
The job is open to U.S. citizens. Non-citizens may be appointed only when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens. Veterans get preference when qualifications are about equal.
Experience: The announcement does not give a set number of years of work experience. Some paths require years of independent practice in the U.S. after training, such as for graduates of non-U.S. residency programs.
Education: You need a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an approved school. You also need residency training in an accredited program that makes you eligible for board certification in Family Practice or Internal Medicine. Some applicants with one year of approved training plus two years of independent practice may qualify.
Licenses and certifications:
- Current, full and unrestricted medical license in a U.S. state, territory, or D.C.
- Board eligibility in Family Practice or Internal Medicine (board certification is preferred)
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 66 days (January 8, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
Yes. The announcement may close before the listed closing date if the position is filled another way, and qualified applicants are referred as they apply.
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: You are rated on how well you meet the listed qualifications. Your application, resume, and C.V. will be verified, and errors or missing information may hurt your chances. The VA also runs pre-employment reference checks, and veterans' preference is used as a tie-breaker when qualifications are about equal.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Only apply if you are board eligible in Family Practice or Internal Medicine, since this is required.
- If claiming veterans' preference, attach your DD-214 and, for 10-point preference, an SF-15.
- If you cannot apply online before the closing date, contact Tracy Sheppard at 573-300-5592 or Tracy.Sheppard@va.gov and put CBSS-13104809-27-JM in the Notes field.
