Who can apply: The public.

Open to the public, but only U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. You must provide proof of U.S. citizenship.

Experience: You need one year of nursing experience in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other supervised patient care setting. Examples include checking vital signs, giving immunizations or medications, and updating medical records. The announcement says this work is typical of GS-4 level work, and paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work, counts.

Education: Education cannot replace experience at this grade. Foreign education must be evaluated by a recognized private evaluator or receive full credit from a U.S. accredited college.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current license to practice as a practical or vocational nurse in a U.S. state, territory, or D.C., or proof you have applied for one
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 10 days (November 13, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your full application package, including your resume, questionnaire answers, and supporting documents, is reviewed to see if you meet the qualification requirements. Incomplete packages, errors, or inflated qualifications can make you ineligible or remove you from consideration.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Your resume must be two pages or less, or it will be removed from consideration.
  • Give month and year dates and hours per week for each job, or your application may be marked incomplete.
  • Upload a copy of your nursing license or certification with your application, or you will be rated ineligible.
