Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to U.S. citizens, nationals, and people who owe allegiance to the U.S. The conditions of employment also say you must be a U.S. citizen to apply. Current VHA employees in this occupation may qualify under a grandfathering provision if they meet the criteria.

Experience: No work experience is needed for GS-3. To reach GS-4 you need 6 months of LPN work experience, or 1 year of nursing care work in a hospital, clinic, or nursing home, and to reach GS-5 and GS-6 you need 1 more year at each level below. Previous long-term care experience is preferred.

Education: You must be a graduate of a practical or vocational nursing school approved by the state or accredited by NLNAC. For GS-4, graduating from an approved program of at least 24 months can count instead of work experience. If you studied abroad, you must send a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency with your transcript.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Full, active, current, unrestricted license as a licensed practical or vocational nurse in a U.S. state, territory, Puerto Rico, or DC
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, which must be maintained

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 6 days (November 9, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You will be rated on how well you meet the listed qualifications. Your application, resume, CV, and supporting documents will be verified, and errors or missing information may lower your rating or make you ineligible. VA may also run pre-employment reference checks.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Describe your nursing experience clearly, with exact dates and hours per week, because VA will not assume anything.
  • If you use your education to qualify, upload your transcript and confirm your school is accredited.
  • Check that your photo ID meets REAL ID rules before onboarding, since non-compliant IDs are not accepted.
