Who can apply: The public.

Only U.S. citizens may apply, and citizenship is required at the time of application. Veterans' preference is not required, and the job is open to the public.

Experience: The announcement does not give a number of years or a grade level. Your record of scholarship must show you can conduct and share research, mentor graduate students, and work with other researchers. Part-time and unpaid work, including volunteer work, counts if you list the duties and hours per week.

Education: An earned doctoral degree in a field such as physics, applied physics, atmospheric science, materials science, nuclear engineering, applied mathematics, electrical engineering, computer science, operational science, logistics, supply chain management, systems engineering, aeronautical or astronautical engineering, or a related field. The degree must come from a school accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Foreign degrees need proof of U.S. equivalency. A doctoral degree is required before employment begins.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 272 days (July 27, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

This is an open continuous announcement with an initial cut-off date of 30 Aug 2026, then every 30 days after that. Applicants who apply after a cut-off date are considered only if no one is selected from the earlier group or more openings occur.

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: A faculty-rating panel ranks qualified applicants based on education, teaching, scholarship, and service. The top applicants may be asked for a personal interview and a presentation to faculty. Incomplete packages are not considered, and missing information can lower your rating.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Your resume must show hours per week and dates of employment, or your application may be marked insufficient.
  • Submit transcripts for all Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD degrees with your application, not just the doctorate.
  • Keep your resume to two pages, but your curriculum vitae can be longer and should list teaching, professional, and service work.
