Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to the public, but you must be a U.S. citizen. You must also be determined suitable for federal employment.

Experience: You need at least six months of general experience. This can be administrative, clerical, technical, or military work that involved protecting property, equipment, data, or materials, or making judgments by applying rules, regulations, or laws. The announcement does not tie this experience to a specific grade level.

Education: One year of study at an accredited school above high school, with at least 6 semester hours of study related to police work. Education can also be combined with experience to equal six months. Completing a police academy or similar course with at least 40 classroom hours may count for up to 6 months of general experience.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Valid state driver's license
  • U.S. Government emergency vehicle operator's license
  • Firearm certification and ongoing firearm proficiency
  • CPR and AED certification
  • Completion of the USMC Basic Police Officers Course (BPOC)

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 97 days (February 3, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your resume and supporting documents are rated on how well they show you meet the qualifications. Qualified applicants are referred to the hiring manager, and interviews may be held. Claiming more experience or qualifications than you have can make you ineligible, and incomplete packages or errors can lead to an ineligible rating.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Secret), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Show your six months of general experience on your resume with dates, hours per week, and duties for each job.
  • If you claim education, send transcripts or a course list with grades, dates, and semester hours from accredited schools only.
  • Email your resume to smb_bdgp_mcpd_recruitment@usmc.mil with POLICE OFFICER and DE-12879370-26-MMH in the subject line, since faxes are not accepted.
