Who can apply: The public.

This job is open to the public, but only to U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. Non-citizens may be appointed only when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.

Experience: You must have completed an approved residency program. Other accepted paths are one year of approved post-medical-school training followed by two years of independent practice in the U.S., or non-U.S. residency training followed by at least three years of verified independent practice in the U.S. Length of practice is considered in setting pay, not as a separate qualification.

Education: You need a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) degree, or an equivalent degree, from an approved medical school. The school must have been approved for the year you completed your studies. Foreign medical graduates must meet the ECFMG eligibility requirement for their graduation year.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 2 days (October 30, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

The announcement may close before the closing date if the position is filled another way.

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You will be rated on how well you meet the qualifications listed. Your application, resume, CV, and other materials will be verified, and errors or omissions may affect your consideration. Veterans and preference-eligible candidates receive preference when qualifications are about equal, and pre-employment reference checks are performed.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Complete the occupational questionnaire and submit your application by 11:59 PM ET on 10/30/2026.
  • Clearly list your medical school, residency, and state license details in your CV or resume.
  • If you claim veterans' preference, attach your DD-214 and any required SF-15 proof.
