Who can apply: The public.

This job is open to the public, but only U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. can apply. Veterans and military spouses are considered along with all other candidates.

Experience: To qualify at grade GP-14, you need a completed accredited psychiatry residency and at least 4 years of equivalent experience and training. Experience cannot replace the required residency, and after medical school you need at least one year of supervised clinical work.

Education: You need a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree, or an equivalent foreign degree, from a school accredited as described in the announcement. You also need completed accredited residency training in psychiatry. Foreign education must be evaluated or shown to be equivalent to accredited U.S. programs.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current, active, full, and unrestricted physician license or registration from a U.S. state, D.C., Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory
  • Job-related license or certification, with a copy submitted
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Red Cross, if required

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 24 days (November 27, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire answers are reviewed to check that you meet the qualification requirements. If your qualifications or experience appear inflated, you may lose consideration, and missing documents or information can make your application incomplete.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Secret), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • List your hours per week for each job on your resume, and keep the resume to two pages or less.
  • Upload a copy of your physician license and your job-related license or certification, or you will be rated ineligible.
  • Allow up to an hour for uploaded documents to clear the virus scan before the closing date.
