Who can apply: The public.

This job is open to U.S. citizens. Non-citizens may be appointed only when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens, under VA policy.

Experience: The announcement does not list a required number of years of experience. Residency training is required (see education). Preferred: board eligible or board certified in internal medicine or family practice.

Education: You need a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from a school approved by VA for the year you finished. You also need residency training in an accredited core specialty program that leads to board eligibility, with some exceptions for residents and rare cases approved by the VISN Director.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or D.C.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 64 days (January 8, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

The announcement may close before the closing date if the position is filled another way, and referrals are sent on cut-off dates every two weeks starting October 30, 2026.

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Applicants are rated on how well they meet the listed qualifications. Your application, resume, C.V., and supporting documents will be verified, and errors or omissions may affect consideration.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • If you hold board certification or board eligibility in internal medicine or family practice, state it clearly, since it is preferred.
  • If claiming veterans' preference, upload your DD-214 and SF-15 with proof, or the claim may not be awarded.
  • Make sure your MD or DO degree, residency training, and license details are complete and accurate, since errors can affect consideration.
