Who can apply: The public.
Only U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. can apply. Veterans and military spouses are considered along with all other candidates.
Experience: You must have completed accredited residency training in primary care, family medicine, or internal medicine, plus equivalent experience and training of at least 4 years. Experience cannot replace required residency training. You also need at least one year of supervised clinical work after medical school, such as an internship or the first year of a residency.
Education: You need a Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), or equivalent degree from a school in the U.S. or Canada, accredited by a recognized body. A foreign medical degree needs proof of equivalency, such as permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) or passing the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). Foreign college credits must be evaluated by a recognized private organization.
Licenses and certifications:
- Current, active, full, and unrestricted license as a physician from a U.S. state, D.C., Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Red Cross, if required
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 26 days (November 30, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: Your resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire responses are reviewed to see if you meet the qualifications. If you inflate your qualifications or experience, you may lose consideration, and missing documents or errors may make you ineligible.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Secret), then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Attach your medical school transcript or foreign equivalency proof and a copy of your license, or you will be rated ineligible.
- Keep your resume to two pages or less and list hours per week for each job.
- Show completed residency training in primary care, family medicine, or internal medicine, since experience cannot replace it.
