Who can apply: The public.

This job is open to the public. You must be a U.S. citizen, a national, or someone who owes allegiance to the U.S. Non-citizens may be appointed only when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.

Experience: No specific years of work experience at a grade level are stated. Instead, you need to have completed residency training in an accredited core specialty program. Other routes are one year of approved internship or residency followed by two years of independent practice in the U.S., or a non-U.S. residency followed by at least three years of verified independent practice in the U.S.

Education: You need a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent degree from an allopathic or osteopathic medicine school approved by VA for the year you finished. Foreign graduates must meet ECFMG requirements for their graduation year. You must have board certification or board eligibility in anatomic and clinical pathology. Cytopathology fellowship training is preferred but not required.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia
  • Board certification or eligibility in anatomic and clinical pathology

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 65 days (January 8, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

This announcement may close before the stated closing date if the position is filled through other means.

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You will be rated on how well you meet the listed qualifications. Your application, resume, C.V., and supporting documents will be verified, and errors or omissions may affect your consideration. Preference eligible veterans get preference when qualifications are approximately equal.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Upload a C.V. or resume that shows your residency, board status, and licensing details, since these are verified.
  • The usual 2-page resume limit does not apply to this job.
  • If you claim veterans' preference, attach your DD-214 and, for 10-point preference, the SF-15 with proof.
