Who can apply: The public.

Only U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. can apply. You must provide proof of U.S. citizenship.

Experience: You must have completed accredited residency training in obstetrics/gynecology plus equivalent experience and training totaling at least 4 years. Experience cannot take the place of required residency training. You also need at least one year of supervised clinical work after your medical degree, such as an internship or the first year of a residency.

Education: You need a Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), or equivalent degree from a school accredited in the U.S. or Canada. A foreign medical degree must be equivalent to a U.S. accredited degree, shown by ECFMG certification, a fifth pathway certificate, or passing the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination. Required residency training in OB-GYN must also be completed.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current, active, full, and unrestricted physician license from a U.S. state, D.C., Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 13 days (November 16, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your complete application package, including your resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire answers, will be reviewed to see if you meet the qualification requirements. Missing documents can make your application incomplete and remove you from consideration. If the agency finds you have inflated your qualifications or experience, you may lose consideration.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Secret), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Make your resume two pages or less and list hours worked per week for each job, or your application may be marked incomplete.
  • Upload your physician license or certification with your application, or you will be rated ineligible.
  • List your OB-GYN residency with exact dates, and show how your other experience adds up to at least 4 years.
