Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to the public, but only U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. are listed as eligible. Non-citizens may be appointed only when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens. Former Education Debt Reduction Program participants cannot apply for the student loan incentive.

Experience: Applicants must have completed approved residency training in an accredited core specialty program that leads to board certification eligibility. Other paths include one year of approved post-medical school training followed by two years of independent practice, or non-US residency followed by at least three years of verified independent practice in the U.S. Board certification is preferred.

Education: You must have a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or an equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year you finished.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Check that your residency or independent practice meets one of the three approved paths listed in the basic requirements
  • Submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment if you plan to use the student loan repayment
  • Former EDRP participants are not eligible, so confirm this before applying for the loan repayment incentive
