Who can apply: Career transition (CTAP, ICTAP, RPL), The public.

The job is open to the public, but only U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. can apply. Federal employees whose job or agency was eliminated may get priority under the career transition program (CTAP/ICTAP).

Experience: You need at least 1 year of specialized experience at the GS-14 level, covering all five listed duties, such as leading clinical informatics or health IT standards work and advising senior leaders. After your medical degree, you also need at least 1 year of supervised clinical experience, such as an internship or the first year of a residency, and this must be shown in your resume.

Education: You need a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from a school in the U.S. or Canada that is accredited. A foreign medical degree can qualify if you have ECFMG permanent certification, a fifth pathway certificate, or have passed the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination. The GS-15 level also requires 5 years of graduate training in the job's specialty or equivalent experience and training. Transcripts are required.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a U.S. state, DC, Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 2 days (November 5, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

This announcement may close sooner than its closing date, once 200 applications have been received, so apply early.

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: HR specialists first review your resume to see if you meet the required specialized experience and the basic requirements. Applicants who pass the USA Hire technical assessment may be referred to the hiring manager for a structured interview. Overstating your qualifications or cheating on an assessment can get you removed from consideration.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Your resume must show exact start and end dates (MM/YY) and weekly hours for each job, or you may be disqualified.
  • Describe your 1-year supervised clinical training after medical school in your resume, since it is a basic requirement.
  • Do not copy the duties or questionnaire into your resume; describe your own experience in clear, specific terms.
