Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to the public, and federal employees are encouraged to apply. You must be a U.S. citizen, but the agency says non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.

Experience: No specific years of work experience are required, and staff physician level has no extra requirements beyond the basic ones. Work as a specialty practitioner in hematology and oncology is preferred but not required.

Education: You need a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an approved school, plus completed residency training in an accredited core specialty program. Options include an approved residency leading to board eligibility, or a non-U.S. residency followed by at least three years of verified independent practice in the U.S.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia
  • Board certification may be required because this job supervises medical residents and students

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 174 days (April 23, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

The announcement may close before the closing date if the position is filled through other means.

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You are rated on how well you meet the qualifications listed in the announcement. Your application, resume and supporting documents will be verified, and errors or missing information may affect consideration. VA also performs pre-employment reference checks, and veterans' preference applies when candidates are approximately equal.

Apply on USAJOBS ↗
4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Download the standard VA Clinical Resume from the link in the announcement and upload it to the Resume field, since this is required.
  • Make sure your resume shows month and year dates for each job, plus full-time or part-time status and average hours per week.
  • Apply online through USAJOBS and complete the occupational questionnaire, and claim veterans' preference with documents if you are eligible.
