Who can apply: The public.

This job is open to the public. You must be a U.S. citizen, a U.S. national, or someone who owes allegiance to the U.S. Non-citizens may be hired only if qualified citizens cannot be recruited. Veterans and preference-eligible candidates get preference when candidates are about equally qualified.

Experience: The announcement does not give a set number of years. You must have completed approved residency training, or one year of approved post-medical school training followed by two years of independent practice in the U.S. Experience with EEG, EMG, Botox and inpatient care is preferred.

Education: You need a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from a school accredited by the VA-approved accrediting bodies for the year you finished. Foreign medical graduates must show their school meets ECFMG requirements for the year they graduated.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth or D.C.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 27 days (November 30, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

The announcement may close before the posted closing date if the positions are filled through other means.

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You will be rated on how well you meet the qualifications. Your application, resume, C.V. and other documents will be verified, and errors or omissions may affect your consideration. The VA also runs pre-employment reference checks.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • If you want student loan repayment, submit the EDRP application within four months of appointment and confirm you have not been a past participant.
  • Claim veterans' preference in the questionnaire and attach your DD-214 if it applies, since documentation is required to award it.
  • Your C.V. or resume should clearly show your residency training, dates, and full, unrestricted medical license details, since these are basic requirements.
