Who can apply: The public.

Only U.S. citizens may apply, and you must prove citizenship. The announcement is open to the public.

Experience: You must have completed accredited residency training in family medicine. You also need equivalent experience and training totaling at least 4 years, but experience cannot replace the required residency. After your medical degree, you need at least 1 year of supervised direct patient care, such as a one-year internship or the first year of a residency.

Education: You need a Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), or equivalent degree from a U.S. or Canadian school accredited by a recognized medical accrediting body. A foreign medical degree must be shown equivalent to U.S. schools, such as by permanent ECFMG certification, a fifth pathway certificate, or passing the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination. Foreign college credentials must be evaluated by a recognized private evaluation service or receive full credit at a U.S. accredited college.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current, active, full, and unrestricted physician license or registration from a U.S. state, D.C., Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 58 days (December 31, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your full application package, including your resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire answers, is reviewed to see if you meet the requirements. Missing documents can make your application incomplete, and inflated qualifications can cause you to lose consideration.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Make sure your resume is two pages or less and lists hours per week for each job.
  • Upload your transcript and license or BLS card with your application, or you will be rated ineligible.
  • Uploaded files can take up to an hour to clear virus scan, and the complete package is due by 11:59 PM EST on 12/31/2026.
