Who can apply: The public.

The announcement is open to the public, but the qualifications section says Who May Apply: US Citizens. You must be a U.S. citizen, national, or someone who owes allegiance to the U.S. and prove it.

Experience: You must have completed accredited residency training in Family Medicine, plus equivalent experience and training totaling at least 4 years. Experience cannot be used in place of the required residency training.

Education: You need a Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), or equivalent degree from a U.S. or Canadian school accredited by a recognized accrediting body. Foreign medical degrees must show equivalency, such as ECFMG permanent certification, a fifth pathway certificate, or passing the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination. After the degree, you need at least one year of supervised direct clinical service, such as a one-year internship or the first year of a residency.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current, active, full, and unrestricted physician license or registration from a U.S. state, D.C., Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 4 days (November 9, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You are rated on how well your resume, supporting documents, and online questionnaire meet the qualifications. Missing required documents can make you ineligible, and claiming more experience than you have can remove you from consideration.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Keep your resume to two pages or less and list hours per week for each job.
  • Upload a copy of your physician license or registration, or you will be rated ineligible.
  • If you use education to qualify, upload your transcripts with your application.
