Who can apply: The public.

This job is open to the public. You must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or owe allegiance to the U.S., though non-citizens may be appointed if qualified citizens cannot be recruited. Veterans' preference applies when candidates are about equally qualified.

Experience: The announcement does not set a number of years of work experience. Board certification or board eligibility in diagnostic radiology is preferred.

Education: You need a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) degree from an approved school, plus completed residency training in an accredited core specialty program. Other paths include one year of approved post-school training followed by two years of independent practice, or non-U.S. residency followed by at least three years of verified U.S. practice. In rare cases, the Facility Director can request an exception to the residency requirement.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or DC

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 9 days (November 12, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

This announcement may close before the listed closing date if the position is filled through other means.

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You are rated on how well you meet the qualifications, and you complete an occupational questionnaire. Your application and supporting documents are verified, and errors or omissions may affect whether you are considered. VA also performs pre-employment reference checks.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Claim veterans' preference in the questionnaire and attach your DD-214 if you qualify.
  • Show your residency training and board status clearly in your resume or C.V.
  • Make sure your medical license is current, full and unrestricted before you apply.
