Who can apply: The public.

This job is open to the public, but it is for U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. Non-citizens may be appointed only if qualified citizens cannot be recruited. Former EDRP participants cannot apply for the education loan repayment incentive.

Experience: Entry level (PA-I) needs no experience beyond the basic requirements. PA-II needs 2 years of successful practice as a PA, a PA postgraduate residency, or a doctoral degree in a health-related field; PA-III, the full performance level, needs 3 years of PA practice, or a residency plus 1 year of PA practice, or a doctoral degree plus 1 year of PA practice.

Education: A master's degree in any discipline, or a bachelor's degree in any discipline plus 1 year of experience as a PA. A doctoral degree in a health-related field can help you qualify at the PA-II and PA-III levels. Education must come from a school recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, and foreign education needs a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Full and unrestricted license to practice as a PA in a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia (held or to be held)
  • Passed the PA National Certifying Exam (PANCE), or currently in the process of taking it

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 6 days (November 9, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You will be rated on how well you meet the qualifications in the announcement. Your application, resume, CV, and supporting documents will be verified, and errors or missing information may result in an ineligible rating or a lower score.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Send a long-form resume or CV, since the 2-page resume limit does not apply to this job.
  • If you use education to qualify, attach your transcript, because applicants often forget it.
  • If you claim veterans' preference, select it in the questionnaire and attach your DD-214 with the required proof.
