Who can apply: The public.

Only U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the United States can apply. You will be required to prove U.S. citizenship.

Experience: One year of specialized experience at the GS-6 level. This means work that includes consulting with a physical therapist, interpreting their findings to start care, and making sure the treatment plan is designed to maximize healing. Paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work, counts.

Education: One full year of graduate-level education in a field directly related to the job, such as Physical Therapy, Kinesiotherapy, Kinesiology, Sports Medicine, or Exercise Science. You can also combine education and experience: divide your months of experience by 12, divide your graduate semester hours by 9, and add the two percentages to reach at least 100%. Education must come from schools accredited by a U.S. Department of Education-recognized accreditor. Foreign education must be evaluated or given full U.S. credit.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current, active, valid, and unrestricted Physical Therapy Assistant license from a state, the District of Columbia, or a U.S. territory
  • Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 8 days (November 12, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your full application package (resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire answers) is reviewed to check whether you meet the qualifications. Incomplete packages are not considered further, and you may lose consideration if your qualifications or experience appear inflated.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Your resume must be two pages or less and must list hours worked per week for each job.
  • You must upload a copy of your Physical Therapy Assistant license, or you will be rated ineligible.
  • If you use education to qualify, upload transcripts from accredited schools, or you will be rated ineligible.
  • Use plain language on your resume and avoid acronyms, because the agency will not guess what your experience means.
