Who can apply: The public.

Open to U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. You must provide proof of U.S. citizenship.

Experience: One year of specialized experience, which the announcement says is typical of GS-6 work: carrying out physical therapy treatment plans and teaching physical therapy programs. Paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work, counts.

Education: One full year of graduate-level education in a field directly related to the work, such as physical therapy. You can also combine education and experience, but the two percentages must add up to at least 100%. Foreign education must be evaluated by a recognized private organization or receive full credit from a U.S. accredited college.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current, active, valid and unrestricted Physical Therapy Assistant license or certification from a state, the District of Columbia, or a U.S. territory

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 8 days (November 12, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You are rated on how well you meet the qualifications, based on your resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire answers. Missing or incorrect information can make you ineligible, and inflated qualifications can cost you consideration.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Your resume must be two pages or less and show hours per week for each job, or it may be removed or marked incomplete.
  • Upload your Physical Therapy Assistant license and, if you qualify through education, your transcripts, or you will be rated ineligible.
  • Describe specific work planning physical therapy treatments and teaching patients or programs, since that is the experience this job requires.
