Who can apply: The public.
Only U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the United States can apply. The job is open to the public.
Experience: For GS-05, you need at least 1 year of specialized experience at or equivalent to GS-04 in federal or private or public sector work, such as conducting radiation control checks to make sure inspection requirements are recorded and met. For GS-04, you need at least 6 months of general experience in physical science or a related field, plus 6 months of specialized experience at or equivalent to GS-03 doing basic radiological control checks and recording results correctly.
Education: For GS-05, you need a 4-year bachelor's degree with courses related to the job, such as physical science, engineering, or any branch of math except financial and commercial math. For GS-04, you need 2 years of college above high school with related courses. The announcement asks whether you are using education in place of some or all experience, so education can be used as a substitute, but you must prove it with transcripts or a course list.
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 358 days (October 28, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: Human Resources will review your resume and supporting documents to check that you meet the listed qualifications, and you will be rated on that information. Qualified applicants are referred to the hiring manager, who may choose to interview them, and anyone found to have inflated their qualifications may be found ineligible.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Secret), then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Your resume must show each job's start and end dates by month and year, plus hours per week and, for federal jobs, the pay plan, series, and grade.
- If you use education to qualify, send transcripts or a course list with grades and dates; unofficial copies are acceptable at first.
- Email your complete package to psnsradconjobssandiego@us.navy.mil, because faxed applications will not be considered.
