Who can apply: The public.

This job is open to the public, but you must be a U.S. citizen, national, or someone who owes allegiance to the U.S. You will need to prove U.S. citizenship.

Experience: You need one year of professional experience as an optometrist. This includes examining and treating patients with vision problems or eye diseases, and keeping patient records. The agency says this matches the work done at the GS-11 level. A one-year residency in an accredited program can also qualify, but this job does not allow education to replace experience.

Education: You need a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from a program accredited by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE) when you got the degree. Education cannot replace experience at this grade. Foreign degrees must be evaluated by a private evaluation service or get full credit at a U.S. accredited school.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current, full, unrestricted license to practice optometry in a U.S. state, D.C., Puerto Rico, or a territory
  • Passing score on the National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO) exams
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 4 days (November 9, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your full application package, including your resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire answers, is reviewed to see if you meet the qualifications. Inflated qualifications can cause you to lose consideration, and errors or missing items can lower your rating or make your application incomplete. Veterans and military spouses are considered with all other candidates.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Upload your license or certification and your transcript with your application, or you may be rated ineligible.
  • Keep your resume to two pages or less and list hours worked per week for each relevant job.
  • Only experience can meet the requirement here, so describe your optometry work clearly on your resume.
