Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to the public, but applicants must be U.S. citizens or legal U.S. residents in Germany. Under the Status of Forces Agreement, you must be a U.S. citizen or a citizen of a NATO country with a U.S. permanent resident card, and German citizens and ordinarily resident U.S. citizens are not eligible.

Experience: You need clerical work experience that shows you can do the job at the NF 2 level. The announcement asks for basic computer skills and knowledge of basic accounting, calculators, and office equipment, and experience with requisition, stock control, inventory, or transfer procedures and typing skills are desirable.

Education: Education cannot replace experience for this job. Foreign education can count only if you show it is equivalent to a U.S. education.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 10 days (November 13, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your application package is first checked to see if you meet the minimum qualifications. Your resume is then compared with your questionnaire answers to rate your level of experience, and you may lose consideration if you have overstated your qualifications or experience.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Describe your clerical and computer experience clearly on your resume, since volunteer and unpaid experience also counts.
  • If you qualify through education, include transcripts, and provide proof that foreign education is equivalent to a U.S. education.
  • Upload proof for any preference you claim, such as a DD-214 for veterans, or your application may be incomplete.
