Who can apply: The public.
This job is open to U.S. citizens, nationals, and people who owe allegiance to the U.S. Non-citizens may only be hired when qualified citizens cannot be recruited.
Experience: For GS-3, six months of general experience that shows you can learn nursing assistant skills qualifies you; for GS-4, one year of specialized experience as a nursing assistant or in another medical field such as licensed practical nurse or hospital corpsman; for GS-5, one year of experience at the GS-4 level. Experience can be paid or unpaid, including volunteer work.
Education: One year of education above high school with courses related to nursing assistant work qualifies for GS-3, and a short intensive training course of less than one year may also meet the GS-3 experience requirement. GS-4 requires 2 years above high school in nursing care, health care, or a related field, plus additional skills. GS-5 requires a 4-year degree with 24 semester hours of health care courses, or a bachelor's degree. Education must come from schools accredited by a U.S. Department of Education-recognized accrediting body.
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents

3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 331 days (September 30, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
This is an open continuous announcement. The first referral cut-off date is November 2, 2026, and applications received after that date are referred at regular intervals as vacancies occur.
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: You will be rated on how well you meet the qualifications, based on your online questionnaire and documents. Your application, resume and documents will be verified, and errors or missing information may lower your rating or make you ineligible.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Be clear and specific about your experience, because the VA will not make assumptions about it.
- Read the resume instructions closely: the agency says the 2-page limit does not apply, but the page still asks for the standard clinical resume.
- If you use education to qualify, upload a transcript from an accredited school, and claim veterans' preference in the questionnaire if you are eligible.
Kandidatu is an independent website: only the official posting counts. Read it before you apply.
