Who can apply: Federal employees - Competitive service, The public, Internal to an agency, Federal employees - Excepted service.
The job is open to the public, but the announcement says you must be a U.S. citizen to apply. Current permanent VA employees and current permanent federal employees of other agencies may also apply.
Experience: Six months of general experience that shows you can learn nursing assistant skills qualifies you for GS-3. GS-4 requires one year of specialized experience as a nursing assistant or in another medical field, such as licensed practical nurse or hospital corpsman; GS-5 requires one year of progressively responsible work at the GS-4 level.
Education: One year of schooling above high school with courses related to nursing assistant work, or an intensive training program of less than one year for this occupation, can qualify you for GS-3. For GS-4, two years above high school with nursing or healthcare courses qualifies; for GS-5, a four-year degree with 24 semester hours of health care courses, or any bachelor's degree, qualifies. Your transcript must be submitted if you use education to qualify.
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 3 days (November 6, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
The announcement will close once 50 applications are received, which may be before the official closing date.
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: You will be rated on how well you meet the listed qualifications, and your application, resume, and documents will be verified. Errors or missing information may lower your rating or make you ineligible, and reference checks may be done.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Describe your patient care experience clearly and specifically, because the VA will verify it
- Submit a transcript if you use school to qualify, and only accredited schools count
- Apply early, since the announcement may close after 50 applications
